Black Friday - more like See Red Friday.

Unless you have been living under a rock over the past week you will have noticed that this coming Friday is Black Friday. Over the years, the usually understated Brits have slowly adopted more and more Americanisms - Halloween, proms, saying ‘like’ in every sentence - and Black Friday is the latest and possibly the scariest to grace our shores.

Firstly, what is it? Black Friday is the day following Thanksgiving Day in the United States. Since 1932, it has been regarded as the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the U.S., and most major retailers open very early (and more recently during overnight hours) offering promotional sales to lure people in. This may sound innocent enough but for some reason it seems to send people absolutely crazy.

Until recently the only exposure us Brits had to this ordeal was watching news reports of American people on TV, scrambling over each other to get into the shops, punching their way through the crowds to grab the last few products off the shelves, and elbowing old people and children alike in the face to get to the tills first. We could smugly settle down on our sofas with popcorn to safely watch on as the crazed shoppers ripped each other to shreds.

Not anymore - oh no. Now that Black Friday has come to our shores we have been infected with whatever it is that has sent the Americans so crazy. In 2014 a man was arrested in a Tesco in Salford after he threatened to "smash a staff member's face in". People breaks wrists, legs, and promises to each other to remain sane.

Now that the shoe is on the other foot and I am in the position of the seller, however, I can’t see a reason why I shouldn’t get involved too. Unlike the likes of Argos and Asda, I am going to stick to the traditional format and only offer a discount on Black Friday itself rather than stretching it out for weeks on end. So, if anyone is looking to save a few quid on their Christmas shopping please do visit my website on Friday. I promise it will be a stampede free zone!
