Taking the Plunge: Turning your craft into a business
Firstly, thank you so much for visiting my website!
Over the past year or so I have been plotting how to turn something I love doing into my own little venture, namely hand embroidering cushions with silly messages to make people smile. I've always been in to crafts but this specific idea came about one Christmas when I wanted to make some really personalised gifts for my family members rather than just flogging out to the shops to buy them some mass produced rubbish that would end up in a cupboard somewhere. I couldn't believe just how well they went down and a light bulb went on in my head.
And here I am, taking the plunge. As Miranda Hart says, 'Plunge - good word isn't it? Plunge'. While it might be fun to say, taking it is another thing altogether.
There is no end to material online and books on the subject of turning your passion into a viable business and it's pretty tricky to know where to start. After months of research I'm still very much on a learning curve and feel like I have a lot to learn.
Excitingly, I applied to The Prince's Trust Enterprise Programme (www.princes-trust.org.uk) and they have invited me along to join in a series of seminars. For those of you unfamiliar with the programme, they work with 18 to 30 year-olds to 'turn big ideas into a business reality' through training and mentoring support. I'm suddenly incredibly grateful that I took the plunge with my little venture now as sadly I am very much at the top end of the 18 - 30 age bracket..! The first seminar is in a couple of weeks so stay tuned and I will let you know how I get on!
